Weed Management in Xtendflex® Soybean in 2025
February 6, 2025
What is the current situation concerning the use of any Xtendimax® herbicide formulations on soybean and cotton?
For 2025 and beyond, Bayer has made a new submission to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to approve a low volatility dicamba product for use with dicamba-tolerant soy and cotton. The new submission includes some proposed label changes, which Bayer believes are necessary to make a timely EPA approval possible.
On May 3, 2024, the EPA issued a Notice of Receipt for our new submission and also posted a copy of our new label proposal online. The EPA also opened a 30-day public comment period to give interested stakeholders sufficient opportunity to provide input and perspective early in the registration process.
The next steps in this registration process are up to the EPA.
Can we still plant XtendFlex® soybean and cotton products and use the available herbicides tolerances that still have active labels?
Yes. Products containing Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® technology and XtendFlex® technology also provide high yield potential and tolerance to other herbicides. All herbicides must be used in accordance with their labels. Pesticide labels are legally binding, and all farmers and applicators are required by law to read and follow all pesticide product labeling.
What pre-emergent products can be used?
A strong pre-emergent herbicide program should always be included in a soybean production system. Assuming herbicide resistance is not a concern, some examples include:
- sulfentrazone + metribuzin
- sulfentrazone + chlorimuron
- metribuzin + S-metolachlor
- flumioxazin + chlorimuron + thifensulfuron
- flumioxazin + pyroxasulfone
- flumioxazin + metribuzin + pyroxasulfone
- flumioxazin + chloransulam
- metribuzin + S-metolachlor + chloransulam
- metribuzin
- flumioxazin + metribuzin + chlorimuron
- pyroxasulfone + fluthiacet
- S-metolachlor
- dimethenamid-p
- acetochlor
- pyroxasulfone
- pendimethalin
- ethalfluralin
- trifluralin
Each of these products will have different efficacy on specific weed species. Consult the label of any pesticide to ensure the proper use, timing, and target species of any application.
What post emergence products can be used with XtendFlex® soybean given that low volatility dicamba products have not been approved for use in-crop for the 2025 spray season?
Some examples of available products include:
- acetochlor
- acetochlor and fomesafen
- acifluorfen
- bentazon
- chlorimuron-ethyl
- cloransulam-methyl
- fomesafen
- flumetsulam
- flumiclorac and pyroxasulfone
- fluthiacet-methyl
- glufosinate
- glyphosate
- imazamox
- imazethapyr
- lactofen
- pyroxasulfone
- pyroxasulfone and fluthiacet-methyl
- S-metolachlor
- thifensulfuron-methyl
Each of these products will have different efficacy on specific weed species. Read and follow the label of any pesticide to determine the proper use, timing, and target species of any application.
No dicamba may be used in-crop with seed with Roundup Ready® Xtend Technology, unless and until approved or specifically permitted, and no dicamba formulations are currently registered for such use in the 2025 season. Please follow www.roundupreadyxtend.com/pages/xtendimax-updates.aspx for status updates. Dicamba may harm crops that are not tolerant to dicamba.
