Connecting a World of Opportunities to Promote Insight and Collaboration in the Pickling Cucumber Value Chain

January 28, 2015

Nunhem, the Netherlands, January 29, 2015 – To further increase local productivity and global trade without compromising the environment, a sustainable improvement of pickling cucumber production is needed. On January 27, 28 and 29, more than 50 experts, companies and representatives of pickling cucumber-growing countries across the globe met at the first Global Pickle Summit in Nunhem, the Netherlands, to discuss how this topic can be approached and which challenges and opportunities may arise.

The two and half-day Pickle Summit organized by Bayer CropScience Vegetable Seeds aimed to stimulate fresh perspectives on topics ranging from agronomic challenges such as integrated weed and pest management, value chain requirements programs through to collaboration options in produce chains and product quality promoters. Speakers shared their individual experiences and perspectives and presented new approaches to promote other ways of thinking and approaching challenges in the global pickling cucumber market.

“The Global Pickle summit was an eye opening experience. I was exciting to learn that the opportunities and challenges we face in North America are similar in all cucumber growing regions of the world” Jeff VanRoboys, President The Pickle Station/ TVF Farms “The summit provided the forum to network and collaborate with producers and processors across the globe. It created new ideas for future skill transferring and potential business opportunities”

Bayer CropScience is actively seeking to engage in dialog and embrace a joint approach to address this topic. “Innovations and new technologies can play a major role in advancing in pickling cucumber cultivation,” said John Willems, Global Head of Marketing & Sales at Bayer CropScience Vegetable Seeds. “We offer our combined expertise in seeds and traits as well as chemical and biological crop protection and an innovative product portfolio to meet the economic challenges of our customers. We want to collaborate and build strong partnerships with growers and value chain partners around the world to find new ways to promote pickling cucumber production and consumption.”
